NEW SONG AND VIDEO ALERT: DI

DI ALL I KNOW

DI is a new EDM electronic artist who is so lo-fi nobody knows who she is. Music Crowns had a little chat with the anonymous artist since her new single and video are about to come out, and here’s what came of it.

  1. DI, why the anonymity in regards to who you are? What’s the main reason behind it?

The main reason is a reluctance to place focus on image and editorialising during part one of the initiative phase. As an introduction I think the music should be (cue your best French accent) the tour de force or the pièce de résistance! I think concentration on the music is the natural course to take and wherever the music goes I’ll have no choice but to submit and follow.

  1. Is there anything that you could share with our readers about yourself? We’d love to get to know you at least a bit, even if it means knowing whether DI is your actual name or not?

Di could stand for ‘dissection’ as it is a diminutive of my real name Diana. So I didn’t have to wait for divine inspiration or for my alter ego name to come to me in a hazy but deeply symbolic dream. Out of sheer laziness I thought lets go with Di and drop the rest. If you must know, caramelised peanuts are my guilty pleasure.

  1. What made you choose the path in electronic music and why?

It was completely unplanned. I fell into the rabbit hole.

  1. All I Knowis the upcoming new single which will be out 21st August. How did this track come about and for those who haven’t heard it yet, who/what would you compare the sound to?

I wrote it on a melancholic train ride, hence the verse, “Biding my time on my train ride/All I see are endless wires/All my sadness, wave goodbye/ See me on the other side”. I’ve described the track as ‘melancholic EDM overdosing on magic’ (a tag line I’ve had to repeat many a time). As for comparisons I don’t see any obvious ones- maybe ZHU or Pep and Rash in terms of the androgynous effect placed on the vocals?

  1. How does the live side look for DI? Do you cover your face  or how do you go about keeping yourself unseen/unrecogniable on stage?

I have no idea right now about the live aspect. I’ve been cocooned in the studio so I’m going to have to put my thinking hat on for that. Maybe I’ll wear a mask or maybe I’ll do a big reveal. Who knows?

  1. What’s the most exciting thing that’s happened in your career   so far and why?

Making music and finding a sound I’m happy and comfortable with. I guess the exciting bit is turning a latent idea scribbled down on a scrap of paper into a tangible (I know we live in a digital age but CDs still exist and seeing your stuff on line is, let’s say transcendentally tangible) thing is pretty magical.

  1. And what’s the most embarrassing/funny thing that’s happened in your music career so far?

Trying to explain Bohemian Rhapsody to a song writer. Surely everyone knows that song?! We didn’t have internet connection so I had to do a few cringe imitations of Freddie Mercury like: ‘I’m just a poor boy nobody loves me, etc”.  I’m sure he’s heard the song but had brain freeze that day. I told him to watch Wayne’s World as well.

  1. If you could have one music-related wish come true, what would you wish for and why?

Oh, only to have a number one worldwide. Or to have a crowd of people sing my lyrics back to me. I’d probably cry a bit.

  1. What’s next for DI after All I Know is released?

After ‘All I Know’ I’ll still be honing my skills, writing more and fingers crossed release more. Work my way upwards. Avoid the snakes and climb the ladders.
