Nurses sing to patients as they have their last round of chemo

Nurses at Stanford Hospital sing to patients on their last day of treatment.

Coming to the end of cancer treatment is definitely something worth celebrating. And to help with this, the nurses at Stanford Hospital perform a song for patients that are leaving. They sing ‘The Chemo Song’ to the tune of the 1963 hit ‘My Boyfriend’s Back’ by The Angels. The lyrics include:

The chemo’s done and you won’t be coming back! Hey now, hey now, the chemo’s done!

The song started when one patient asked for the staff to sing at the end of her chemo. The staff sang an impromptu song with only the lyrics “the chemo’s done, the chemo’s done”. From there a patient’s son wrote lyrics for the staff to sing to his mother. They then took it and turned it into a more generic song which they can sing to all patients who will be leaving.

You can see the emotion the patients faces as they watch the performance. The performance is upbeat and heartwarming. The nurses enjoy doing it as it lets them end their day on a positive note, which is important in their line of work. Other patients nearby will hear the song and be inspired to keep fighting as one day they will be able to have the song sang to them.
