Review: You Said – Tumbler

The man behind Tumbler, Richard Grace, described himself as just an ordinary old bloke with two marriages behind him and a father of six sons. However, along with his son Harry Grace and long term friend Dave Needham, he created something really enchanting and magical through his upcoming album, “You Said”. Maybe because it’s a real mix bag of folk music with a little injection of the blues and rock and roll, coupled with folklore-like storytelling which personally ignites and warm the soul with pure delight.

The 12-track production kicks off with the chirpiness of folk, which somewhat gives a modern feel in “Moments (She Reappears)”, before disappearing and a modernised rock and roll takes over in “Don’t Think Twice (She Says)”. The album makes a brief return to the uplifting and sugary sweet presence of folk music, this time a little stripped back, with “London Girl”. Then out of nowhere, there’s an explosion of pure, soul-satisfying gritty blues, with that classic low-down dirty vocals to match in “Bussinessman Blues”. The sweetness and sheer magicness of modern folk couldn’t keep away, returning with a even more stripped back performance, through “Sleepy Bananas Are Cool” and “Dennis And Jean”.

Deep a little deeper and the magic created so far in the album strengthens by ten-folds. “Bueller” and lead single, “Break or Fall” display the perfect balance of buttery soft rock and folk, which have the strong potential to earn a place in the mainstream charts. What’s so magical about these tracks is that the two genres aren’t begging for attention – instead, they prefer to co-exist in complete harmony.

“You Said” ends on a high with the old fashioned folk taking a shot with “Call Me Sentimental” and the racy “Dead Man’s Bones.”

This album will go down well with lovers of the blues, rock and roll and folk music…and anyone who’s not particularly into the aforementioned genres would at least find this little treasure pleasing to the ears.

“You Said” releases on 25th September via Bandcamp…but for now, have a listen to lead single, “Break or Fall.”
