Telen Rodwell, new single ‘Mr Million Miles Away’ – review

Telen Rodwell MillionReleased November 4th, ‘Mr Million Miles Away’ is the latest single from Telen Rodwell’s debut album ‘Shadowman’. Interestingly, given that the album as a whole is relatively varied, this second release sticks remarkably close to the formula that turned heads on his first single ‘Heart of Gold’ – this is pure, produced pop at its most comfortable, and all the better for it.

There is a lack of pretense to the song which is refreshing when taking into account some of the work of Rodwell’s singer-songwriter contemporaries. He is not afraid to be wilfully commercial in his search for success, and thus strays very close to the territory of Daniel Powter in his sound. With the same piano pop feel as many of Powter’s best received hits, this effort might well have legs too.

It’s well produced, brilliantly captured with all the pop tropes present and correct, and has a slow build throughout which takes us inexorably towards the final crescendo. There’s not a lot here you haven’t heard before, but it’s done with such penache that you won’t care.
