Deaf child hopes to perform sign with Lewis Capaldi following viral video

This touching video shows a deaf girl signing the lyrics to Lewis Capaldi’s UK hit ‘Someone to Love’ in the hopes she’ll be able to perform with the famous singer. Watch the video below.

Niamdh Braid, 10, was born with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, relying on hearing aids and sign language for communication.

Niamdh recorded her performance after learning Capaldi would be singing at the Tartan Heart Festival near Inverness at the end of August.

It is the young girl’s dream to sign with the Scottish singer on stage at the festival held at the Belladrum Estate, a festival Niamdh has attended since the age of 4.

Speaking with Edinburgh News, she said: “It took me a day and a half to learn it. I would be so happy and excited just to perform with him. I love him loads, he’s really good. My friends said it would be cool to go on stage with him and how lucky I would be.”

Her mum Sam, 37, filmed her sign performance and sent her daughters request to the festival’s bosses, who thought it was a great idea.

Sam added: “I just hope Lewis sees the request and makes my little girl’s dreams come true.”

Although she can speak, Sam thinks it is vital for Niamdh to learn sign language (BSL) so that she can communicate with her deaf friends.

Sam said: “She is the only deaf child in my family and the only one at her school. She uses two hearing aids and other assistive hearing aids at school so she can hear her teacher. If there is too much background noise, she has to rely on lip-reading.

“I’m currently learning BSL so I can communicate with my child but I have to pay for it. She’s doing BSL with us and spending time with other children. I can’t get an instructor to come and teach her because she’s too young. One instructor said they will take her on at 12.”

Since Saturday, the video of Niamdh signing has already been shared 200-times on social media.
