‘To The Bone’ features a gentle piano melody and a moving vocal performance from Julia Ivory

Julia Ivory is a singer-songwriter from Sydney, Australia.

Falling out of love with music was one of the best things that have ever happened for Julia Ivory, time and space allowed Julia to realize it was never actually the music that she hated.

Music is no longer about perfection or constantly being in the spotlight for Julia, who at just 19 is showing wisdom beyond her years, creating a place where she can explore all of her feelings and emotions without judgement.

Performing in choirs from the age of six, Julia Ivory’s talents were undeniable to those around her but by high school the immense pressure to achieve perfection in both how she looked and sounded was having a severely damaging impact on her self esteem.

Julia stopped taking singing lessons as soon as she graduated from High School, she remained trapped in performance mode and could not escape an omnipresent sense of pressure to be perfect all the time.

In early 2020 Julia was diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa and the door to her recording studio right next to her bedroom remained untouched for months, the room alone was a trigger for too much anxiety.

In the thick of her eating disorder Julia Ivory found herself in her living room late at night trying to calm herself down.

Her instincts led her back to the piano she hadn’t sat at since High School and she mustered up all of her energy to lift her hands to the keys. Frail and scared she began to play and at once she remembered what to do. Julia was hooked on a keyline and before she knew it, she had written her debut single ‘To The Bone’.

Julia had recently watched a movie with the same name on Netflix and was immensely impacted by how much she related to the story.

For the first time during her battle with her mental health, she felt completely understood and began to explore this newfound and unfamiliar freedom through her music.

In her own words Julia Ivory explains that she “gave up on music because I wasn’t enjoying the way I had been coached to perform, I never hated music. I Just didn’t know there were other ways to appreciate it. This for me was life changing as I started to try and have this mentality with my mental health and recovery. Going through this journey whilst in recovery was my ticket out of the hell I was living in. I didn’t hate my life, I just had to find the one that was good for me.”

‘To The Bone’ features a gentle piano melody and a beautiful and moving vocal performance from Julia Ivory.

The song’s lyrics resonate deeply especially when you consider everything Julia has been through.

Julia wants to help others feel less alone and to show them that whatever they’re feeling, whether it be physically, emotionally or mentally, is entirely valid. With the release of ‘To The Bone’, a painful chapter of her life finally draws to a close and she can’t wait for the next chapter that is just about to start.

“These battles are a lot easier when you have support around you, but there are many people who are alone in this fight and I hope that through my music I can be there for them.”
