Leonard Cohen dies aged 82

Leonard Cohen has died aged 82 having only released his latest album, ‘You Want It Darker’, a couple of weeks back.

The Canadian songwriter, poet and performer was best known for his songs Suzanne, Bird On A Wire, The Partisan, So Long Marianne, and especially Hallelujah, which took him five years to write, was covered by Jeff Buckley among many others.

“It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away” a post on his Facebook page read. “We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries.”

The Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, sent out two tweets, first in French and then in English. “No other artist’s music felt or sounded like Leonard Cohen’s. Yet his work resonated across generations,” Trudeau wrote. “Canada and the world will miss him.”

A memorial is set to take place in Los Angeles at a later date.
