Chicago’s All-Female Soul/Hip-Hop Group ‘Highness’ Debuts Single

Highness

Highness is the all-female soul/hip-hop band from the middle of the map. Hailing from Chicago, this eclectic five piece group is a sort of welcome take on the twenty year loop as they pull from 90s bohemian movements and use their music to convey the kind of innate strength and independence those locally have come to know the group for. Today, the group drops a video for their single “Have A Nice Day” off their upcoming full-length release, Young Taboo, that is slated for a mid-June release. Here, viewers get a first look at Loona Dae, Gem Tree, RED,Ora Nchi and Midore as they channel the vibes of early 90s aesthetics in their easily endearing visual rendering for the piece that allows those in and out of the city a chance to get a look at one of the most exciting acts rising up from the ground floor in Chicago.

Highness began as a nine piece band in 2011 when Loona Dae and RED, then in college, were presented an interesting idea to start a band. Although RED, Gem Tree and Loona Dae were already friends at the time, Loona Dae reached out to musicians and today’s current members Midore and Ora to join them in a jam session. A month or so after these women came together, they landed their first gig at Columbia College Chicago’s battle of the bands known as “Biggest Mouth”, held at the Metro. Since then they’ve played throughout Chicago at notable venues such as Reggie’s, The Shrine, Abbey Pub, Double Door, Multi Kulti as well as throughout the midwest, for example, St Louis’ historical BB’s Jazz & Blues Club.

Now, in 2015, Highness (formally known as SHE) is made up of five women: Ora Nchi, RED, Midore, Loona Dae, and Gem Tree. Many would describe their performance as “enchanting” or “hypnotizing”. These women are collectively producers, musicians, performers and much more. They expect to release their debut studio project in early 2015.
