‘Rebellious’ Westberg helps us find light in the darkness with new track, ‘Galaxy Disco’.

Mark Westberg has recently released their new single ‘Galaxy Disco’. I sat down with them and discussed all things music, recording and advice.

– Tell us about what your amazing single ‘Galaxy Disco’ was inspired by?

My latest release, “Galaxy Disco”, is an original rock and roll/folk punk tune penned and composed by myself around mid-late 2020, which is inspired by a particular childhood event and includes themes such as youthful rebellion, my own mentally divergent experience perceiving color and sound, and the concept of finding happiness and light within darkness.

–  In order for you to have a good recording session are there any things you need in order for it to go well for you?

I guess it really depends on what sound you are envisioning at the end of the day, whether you’re aiming for more of a demo tape/professional recording/live sound/etc, or even what type of music artist you’d like to be. For myself personally, I have equipment in my own makeshift studio such as a preamplifier (a Focusrite Scarlett is excellent), extra guitar strings and picks, a program on my computer to record into (which in my case, is GarageBand), an amplifier on standby if I need it, electric and acoustic guitars for variety, a good quality microphone with mic covers to reduce “popping” on the track (I highly recommend a Sennheiser myself), a music stand if needed for written/typed lyrics, extra cords, a stand for your guitar while working on vocals, decent headphones, and of course remembering to defuse any excess noise which may bleed into the recording that you don’t want. I also enjoy working and collaborating with with those who can help me edit, mix, and master my projects and compress and balance out the sound(s). It’s important to have those extra ears and perspectives while delving into the creative process. One of the most overall important needs of recording music? Making time for it. Perspiration and patience (with the music and for yourself) are just as key as having talent.

– What other artists out right now do you think is your biggest competition?

I prefer to think of other artists/bands as potential collaborators, partners, and assets, as opposed to “competition”.

– Who would be your three dinner party guests (dead or alive)?

Alive:

Keith Richards

My band mates in Seattle because I absolutely miss them.

The cast of the new Queer Eye

Deceased:

David Bowie

Sister Rosetta Tharpe

My very good friend, Steele Justiss, who sadly passed away this last year of 2021. Miss you, dude!

– Is there any advice you would like to give your younger self for coming into the music industry or something to help the songwriting process?

One of the most important meanings of life is to create. So be patient with finding/discovering your sound, don’t worry too much about failure, experiment and collaborate as much as possible, actively listen to other perspectives and become inspired, remember that there is always something to learn, and stay true to your truth and personal authenticity, because it always has something to say. And of course, remember to have fun doing what you love; create with love.
