EP Review: Own Your Ocean – Direct Divide (RIYL: Florence and the Machine and Muse)

For the best part of last year, Razz, Kevin Proctor and Valdemar Huguet toured across the US, released a single AND an album. So what’s the symphonic rockers’ plans for 2015? Well you won’t catch them relaxing in the Bahamas with an exotic cocktail. That’s because their unlikely signature of raging, ever-ready electric bass and the alluring tone of the violin have left critics and fans wanting more. So Instead of sunbathing in the Bahamian sun, they crafted their latest EP, ” Own Your Ocean”, which will be ready for your inspection from 24th July.

Their offerings, “Kick It” and “We Are Legion” truly represents their trademark: the raging electric guitar and the flirtiness of the violin fights for attention – and neither of them are backing down. The battle of the two instruments is soothed over by Razz’s roaring powerhouse vocals.

“Renegade” possess more or less the same qualities as “Kick It” and “We Are Legion”, minus the brutal dominance of the violin. Instead its presence becomes subdued, barely audible among the ever-ready-guitars and drums. It’s a shame as without the power of the fiddle, it becomes another average rock track that’s suited for a teen movie.

The dynamic trio shows different side to them through “Tide Is Riding” and “1000 Years”. The high-energy of the guitars and drums were turned down a few notches, allowing the playful-than-ever violin and Razz’s now soothingly-soulful vocals take centre stage. Absolutely stunning.

With a perfect balance between the bitter and sweet, ” Own Your Ocean” will definitely keep these ‘road warriors’ touring across the US…and possibly further afield.
