Culann discuss their growing success, inspirations and challenges of making a new album.

Word is the music Scene in Scotland is on fire lately!

How does it feel to have won the ‘Best Rock Act’ at this years SAMA’S?

It’s an amazing achievement for the band, one that we’re all really proud of. There are so many quality rock bands in Scotland so to have won something like the SAMA’S is quite special!

Can you describe your music style to our readership and whom they may be able to compare you to?

I think it’s a wee bit difficult to say who we sound like. There are 5 members of Culann and we all genuinely have quite varied influences. We are an alternative rock band first and foremost but with a progressive & folk influence.

When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together?

We formed a few years ago and played some gigs, all the while not taking it very seriously. In the last two years we knuckled down and wrote a full album, recorded it and launched it at King Tuts in December. We were all friends before we played in this band together and that’s a good base for any band. I think we’re inspired to write music because of our passion for music, and being able to create something together is rewarding,

What has been your biggest challenge as a band?

I think making a full album was a good challenge for us, we decided to make it and just powered through. We even managed to get Jon Astley to master the CD.

Tell us about your new album

I think we have found our sound with the debut album. We had recorded a few EP’s before but this album combines all the best elements of our songwriting to date. I think it’s quite a powerful album with lots of strong songs. We made sure there was no filler to be heard anywhere. It’s just ten songs that we were all delighted with, we are really proud of the album & it’s been selling really well which is amazing also.

For rock bands today do you think it’s easier or harder to become a success?

I think it’s a good challenge for bands who want to achieve something because with the right amount of time and effort you can. Once you have a good platform to build on, it’s a case of playing gigs, networking & getting your music heard.
