Introducing: Lampa

Lampa

Up-and-coming DJ and producer Lampa is quickly making a name for himself as one of the fastest moving talents around. Andrew Lampa, better know with his stage-name Lampa is establishing himself as one of Canada’s best young Dance music prospects and is making big waves in his hometown Winnipeg behind the decks of the renowned Reign Nightclub.

Whilst he first got his name out there with his well-received Progressive House remix of One Republic‘s ‘Apologize’, Lampa continued his path by putting his signature on mainstage edits for heavyweight names like: Dannic, Kanye West and Borgeous to name a few. He is now busy cooking up new music and working through his growing DJing schedule, so we decided to have a chat with Lampa to get to know him a bit better and get an exclusive insight into his future plans.

Hi Lampa, how are you and what’s going on in your world at the moment?
I’m great, thank you. A lot has been going on recently, especially with the launch of my residency at Winnipeg’s newest club, Reign Nightclub. DJing three Halloween events within 24 hours of each other at Commerce, Scream, and Sins & Secrets. I won’t need much planning for a costume since I’ll be a zombie anyway.

Where are you currently based?
Winnipeg, Canada.

How would you describe your sound?
I’d been involved with so many different genres before Dance music, hard to say “nothing genre specific” – something you can listen to anywhere, at the club, in the gym, in bed before you sleep. You can have a big drop, thick chords, but none of that matter without a solid arrangement.

Has your style gone through any changes along the years?
So much. I initially started off as a songwriter producing Pop/R&B, later Rap & some K-pop, I was everywhere. My first “official” Dance track was actually in 2010. I might have it somewhere uploaded on Facebook actually.

Who were your influences growing up?
My heaviest influences growing up were my parents. Many of us take for granted being brought up with both parents together. They’re both still in good health and I am so thankful for that.

How did you get involved in the Dance music business?
I completed the whole rebrand in 2014 to Lampa – separating myself completely from all prior ventures to go full out with the new direction. I only started DJing late into 2013 so I was building my brand mostly off of my productions and mixes online – I had yet to accept any DJ gigs at the time, I knew I needed to be strategic. My whole network knew I had been writing music for years, so my first show would have had to be a big one. Unarguably the most influential DJ/Producer in our city, and now good friend, John Skene, reached out through social media and we arranged my first gig at Stereo Nightclub (at the time the biggest EDM venue in the city). I brought a triple digit guestlist and earned residency alongside Skene less than a month later. Who gets to say that for their first gig? It all started from there and I have my supporters to thank for that.

Do you consider yourself more of a DJ or producer?
Producer. I have a handful of years on that over DJing. It’s funny because I’ve gained so much momentum this year from DJing, I haven’t even started showcasing what I can really do with my productions. I dropped some remixes but those were more “buzz tools” than anything… the real stuff hasn’t even been announced yet.

Where would you like to see yourself in the months ahead?
Enjoying the holidays with my loved ones while still capitalizing on opportunities that I’m always working towards.

Which is your ultimate career dream?
The same dream I had as a little kid when I bought my first pieces of studio equipment with all my Christmas money 8 years ago – to make a living inspiring people in any aspect of their lives, with my music. To let it be known to those who are going through hardships that they’re not alone, the same way that I am constantly being reminded through music. Music unites us all.

Do you have any projects lined up this year?
Yes. Other than capping the year off playing a lot of big local events, lots of new music ready to go. The same way I was strategic in my first DJ gig, I’ve been strategic planning my record releases as Lampa.

Who’s inspiring you in 2015?
Everyone who has stuck with me thus far. I do it for the people who come out to my shows, the people who stick around after to greet me, the people who take their time to message me, congratulating a set or a release, the people with the Lampa shirts. This will carry through years to come.

If you could choose, who would you like to collaborate with?
Delaney Jane, Julia Michaels, or Kat Nestel would be unreal. Throw in some Jauz, Garrix, and Don Diablo too!

Tell us something not many people know about Lampa?
I once came to class early, every day for a week straight to sneak my most precious Digimon cards with chocolates and letters into my crush’s desk in Grade 1. Looking back… I miss those Digimon cards #fml

Lampa is…
Hungry for chicken wings and/or pizza

Anything to add/shout outs?
Shout out to the squad at Reign Nightclub, Skene and Quinn! To all my family and supporters! You guys are amazing.

Thanks Lampa!
It was a pleasure! Lots to come.
