Introducing: taMe

A team-up between Philipp Ort and Scott D’Souza, taMe is a DJ and production duo which is making waves within the current electronic music scene. Having put their names behind some massive projects such as: Skin & Bone’, ‘Seam Unique’, ‘Musique Electronique EP’, ‘I Want You’, ‘You OK? EP’ and their latest effort ‘Karma EP’, taMe have become known for their top notch quality releases and are continuing their ascension to the very top.

Along the years, the London based duo has been supported by some of the most prominent names within the Dance music realm and have landed a series of high profile gigs, collaborating with and remixing the likes of: Thomas Gandey, Pete Gooding, Coni Soddemann, Andi Rivera, Robert Owens, Colin Dale, Take Me Home and Paris XY to name a few.

We’ve decided to catch up with the guys and have a chat about how they joined forces, their current projects and their plans for the months ahead.

Hey guys, how are you and what’s going on in your world right now?

We are good thanks! At the moment we’re in the throes of promoting our current taMe release, the three tracks ‘Karma EP’ which came out on our taMe Music imprint in June. We are also about to finish our next two-track EP which includes an amazing collaboration with a very talented singer, but we’ll reveal more on that closer to the release!

Where are you currently based?

We’re based in Dalston, London where our studio space is and that is basically taMe HQ.

When and how did you guys meet?

We met at a DJ Mag Top 100 DJ awards party at Ministry of Sound four years ago at the bar obviously! We got to talk and realized we are on the same wavelength creatively and musically so we got into the studio and started writing music together.

How long have you been working together as a duo?

We started out making music as ‘Philipp Ort & Scott D’Souza’ before, then we creating our taMe project in early 2012. That same year we set up our taMe Music label, so it’s been three and a half years now together as a duo.

What’s the meaning behind the taMe moniker?

The name taMe came to us, actually in one of those ‘ubercreative’ moments. Basically we have been tamed from our wild clubbing times and we took all our inspiration and experiences into a relaxed and productive studio environment.

How would you describe your current sound?

Our current sound is based around our Techno influences so big beats, layered with sub, pumping bass lines and lots of melody. taMe is very much about not holding anything back, taking risks and creating timeless electronic music.

Has your sound changed in any way along the years?

Yes definitely, we’ve slowly grown the taMe signature sound organically without rushing anything we do, trying out different ideas along the way and fine-tuning what the end product is each time.

Who were your influences growing up?

Influences, wow…way too many to list here, we’ve both been listen to and playing through all sorts of music styles over the past 15 years – a lot of Punk, Soul, Dance, Hip Hop, and Drum n’ Bass. Ultimately, our music reflects the diversity of styles we both grew up with.

Out of your own catalogue, which is the project that mostly defines what taMe is all about?

It’s definitely our last project, ‘Karma EP’. These three tracks perfectly reflect the sound, melodies and beats we are after – it’s basically ‘taMe Techno’!

Walk us through your major career highlights so far?

We have had the pleasure of working with and/or remixed: Thomas Gandey, Pete Gooding, Robert Owens, Colin Dale, Paris XY and more. So far, our music has received some great support from the likes of Marco Carola, Stacey Pullen, Paco Osuna, Davide Squillace, Ralph Lawson, Slam, SiS, Ibiza Global Radio and Ibiza Sonica Radio. Our remix of Thomas Gandey’s ‘I Wanna Know’ has also been played by Nemone on her BBC 6 Music radio show and our ‘Andi Rivera ft Robert Owens – To Be remix’ has been charted in the ‘Top Ten Must Hear House Tracks’ on Beatport. We’ve also recorded an exclusive guest mix for Suspect London and we were overwhelmed by the great feedback we’ve received!

Where would you like to see taMe in the coming months?

Progressing steadily and patiently towards our goals, sorting out our gig schedule and basically keep doing what we love doing most, producing music and DJing!Do you have any projects lined-up this year?
Yes, we are working with some great vocalists on future material, getting closer to developing our tame live show and keep working on our debut album.

How do you guys go about working together?
We have a great creative flow, similar ideas, a string of musical chemistry – totally on the same wavelength. Plus we’re friends (which helps!), so working together is easy so it’s all good!

What’s the best and worst thing about working as a tandem?
Best thing is having two varied skill sets and bouncing ideas off each other which give us more to bring to the table. Not sure if in our case there is a ‘worst’ because we’re a good match for each other creatively so there’s no downside!

Anything to add/shout outs?
Shouts to all those that have supported taMe and our label taMe Music (see www.taMeMusic.com for the full list) along the way and to those we’ve remixed for and worked with so far like Thomas Gandey, Colin Dale, Robert Owens and Pete Gooding.

Thanks guys!
