Over the last few weeks, Music Crowns has been searching the real Christmas number one. With submissions from all over the world, we’ve been scouring the globe searching for our 2016 Christmas top 40. We have listened to a plethora of Christmas covers and originals – some emotional, some soulful and even some comical submissions. We have been blown away by the raw, undiscovered talent that has graced our ears this month and are pleased to announce that the winner of this year’s competition is Rebecca Puckey.
Rebecca hails from the Saint Austell, Cornwall, on the English South Coast and has melted the hearts of over 125,000 people with her beautiful Christmas cover compilation. At just fourteen years old, Rebecca is not only an extremely talented musician but also a passionate athlete. Fencing for the GB Paralympic team, Rebecca has overcome many obstacles and pushed herself to the limit to make her dreams a reality.
We were lucky enough to catch up with Rebecca for a quick chat about what makes her tick, what inspires her and what drives her. Below you can watch Rebecca’s competition submission learn a little bit more about her triumphant story to become our Christmas number one winner.
So Rebecca tell us a little bit more about you – what’s been going on this year?
Not much to be honest I’ve only just really started singing out in public so I haven’t had many public gigs yet.
Is this an aspect you’re trying to push and get more live shows?
Yes definitely, I’ve only done a couple here and there so it would be nice to secure a few more.
How long have you been singing for
About a year and a half.
Is it a passion you’ve always had? Do you come from a musical background?
My parents aren’t musical – my mum used to play clarinet – I think that’s about it. My brother started music before me and I wanted to be like him. So, I started playing the guitar and started singing a year or two later.
So how long have you been playing the guitar?
I’ve been playing the guitar since I was about eight.
So you’re like Ed Sheeran in that respect?
Yeah I guess so. I’m ginger as well!
What are your influences and inspirations other than your brother as you said?
I don’t have many really – I just like to do my own thing – I don’t really try to sound like anyone else.
We saw you did a cover of Daisy Clark’s ‘Oceans’ how did that come about?
I saw Daisy on Music Crowns and saw she was from Cornwall so I checked her out. I just absolutely love her music.
Looking through some pictures saw some team GB stuff you were doing. What’s the story behind that?
I’m in the GB team for Paralympic fencing. I have a few conditions, the main one is called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome – it’s a connective tissue disorder which causes joint instability and chronic pain all the time.
What are your aspirations for the future? What does 2017 hold for you?
I hadn’t really thought about it yet, to be honest. Team GB takes up quite a lot of my time training. Music wise, I just think I’m going to aim for more public performances to gain more experience and exposure.
