Bohemian Rhapsody is finally being released in China – with all homosexual content removed

Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody is reportedly set to be released in China – with all scenes including homosexual content removed.

The film, which details the life of the group’s late frontman, Freddie Mercury, features the band’s infamous 1985 Live Aid appearance and scenes that see Mercury kissing other men.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, these scenes and depictions of drug use will be cut from the upcoming Chinese release.

The country has a history of blocking media which features gay characters, and as such the release comes as a surprise.

The release will be initially limited and is expected to begin screening in March and will potentially be picked up for a wider release if it proves popular with Chinese audiences.

On Sunday night, Rami Malek took home the Oscar for best actor at the 2019 Academy Awards for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in the Queen biopic.

The 2019 Oscars also saw a rousing opening performance from Queen fronted by Adam Lambert, who later revealed plans for ‘The Show Must Go On’, a new ABC documentary depicting the American Idol star and iconic rock band’s ongoing collaboration
