City String Ensemble challenge classical music preconceptions with their new EP of pop covers

City String Ensemble are London’s most popular and in demand string quartet.

The classically trained musicians have just put their own spin on six popular songs, that were released between 1996 and 2008.

City String Ensemble have just released their second EP ‘Throwback…to the Millennium.’

The EP features 6 tracks, which include reimaginings of songs such as ‘Virtual Insanity’, ‘Genie in a Bottle’ and ‘Say You’ll Be There’.

The Jamiroquai classic now has a more jaunty and upbeat feel to it.

This classical reimagining is more sombre sounding then Christina Aguilera‘s original version, but the charm is still present.

City String Ensemble’s reinterpretation of this Spice Girls favourite wraps things up, by elegantly blending classical music with modern pop.

The classically trained musicians also put their own spin on songs by Estelle, The Darkness and Amy Winehouse.

In her own words the City String Ensemble Sophie Poteratchi founder explains that “With a string instrument, ANYTHING is possible. We want to show that classical musicians can play any genre of music by recreating these iconic songs from our childhood for strings.”
