Current took mindfully lyrical hip hop to the next level with his new album, It’s Just Temporary.

The most emotionally intelligent name in Kansas City’s underground hip hop scene, Current, is set to release his album, It’s Just Temporary, on March 4th, 2022. The official launch of the independently-produced album will be followed by a Livestream on the same day and a live show in Kansas City the day after.

Each track delves into a new emotion or epiphany after adversity, while tracks like Glow Up take you through the vindicatingly euphoric highs of mindful self-development. He saved the most visceral single for last; Dreams / Demons kicks off by carrying a similar trippy warm lo-fi trap timbre to the proceeding tracks, but as it unravels, it reflects the emotional firestorm that the conflation between dreams and demons invokes. He perfected the art of repetition with how he allows his thoughts to echo, reverberate and intensify through the repetition of hard-hitting confessions until he breaks into harsh primal outpours of emotion to the tune of “I’ve been declining for years”, and “I can’t keep making moves out of fear”.

The spoken word interludes give you the REAL opportunity to top up your emotional intelligence as you explore the connotations of emotions, definitions of greatness and success, and the weight of imposter syndrome.

“It’s Just Temporary is a project that tells a story, my story. Over the past six years, I have experienced positives and negatives; there are some days I can’t believe I am where I am. What I learned from all these experiences is that everything is temporary. I learned how to take lessons from the bad times and cherish the good. This is what I convey through my album; that there is no time not to do what you love, no time to give energy to what does not give back to you; because everything is temporary.

The first half of the album shows themes of anger and resentment. There are songs filled with ego and frustration. It takes a turn through the last half, where I am focused on the depression and anxiety that I have experienced. The interludes include my thought process towards these emotions. As an artist, I always want to be vulnerable and show who I am in my art.”

“Current is the epitome of what every breaking artist in 2022 should be. He hooks you in with his narrative depth and shakes the limiting perceptions from you with the wisdom in the lyricism. The instrumentals feel just as intimate as the raw lyrics that run you through relatable trials and tribulations and hard-fought-for optimism.”

About the artist

Birmingham, Alabama-born Kansas City-based artist Current (Zachary Curren) is a rapper, singer, producer and DJ. He started his journey into the world of hip-hop as a DJ for Louie Free back in 2014. Louie Free bought Current his first turntable, and the duo began performing shows together.

Louie eventually convinced Current to start producing using Ableton; he continued to develop his sound over the coming years while he attended pharmacy school, where he began to sense an increase in his stress and anxiety. He was looking for an additional creative outlet. In 2018, he began to write over his instrumentals while working on his writing skills. Initially, he released instrumentals on SoundCloud and eventually across other platforms in 2020.

During the pandemic, Current focused on his writing more than ever before. By expressing his feelings of hopelessness and loneliness, he could tap into his emotions more than he ever had in the past; he unlocked his writing potential through complete vulnerability.
